To promote the rational use of medicines in India in the private and public sector. 

To develop methods for availability of safe and effective medicines.
To develop methods for good quality assurance of medicines.
To improve the procurement, storage and distribution of medicines.
To promote rational prescribing of medicines.
To strengthen health education programmes with particular reference to the use of medicines.
To assist state public health department to build capacity in the above areas through systematic training programmes, and
To conduct research on all aspects of medicine use.
Why medicines are important to health care?

Lack of medicines is a constraint to health care. This has a direct effect on the economic health of the country.
